More Men Are Choosing Botulinum Treatments (Botox®, Dysport®)
For men who choose cosmetic procedures (about 8 percent of all patients, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery), botulinum injection is a favorite treatment to refresh an aging appearance. In our youth oriented culture, looking fresh and vital can offer a competitive edge in the job market. Men, like women, appreciate that forehead lines, crow’s feet, and the lines between the brows can be minimized with a few injections in the doctor’s office, without surgery or down time.
In the male population we find botulinum injections to be an easy first step into a rejuvenation routine. There is a higher level of concern about looking fake or “frozen” than there is in women. A careful evaluation of a guy’s goals and starting his treatments with a conservative hand can provide visible results that are within his comfort zone. With each visit, ongoing education about other complementary options (such as fillers or skin tightening) will give the male patient access to broader toolbox to choose from.
For men (and women) who have excessive sweating in the axillae, hands, or feet, botulinum treatments can provide welcome relief from a condition that can be crippling and embarrassing in both work and social situations. Other medical indications (usually administered by a neurologist) include managing the pain from migraines, fibromyalgia, cerebral palsy, strokes, and multiple sclerosis. It has even been shown to be helpful in the treatment of an enlarged prostate.
Given the diversity of benefits, botulinum injections are no longer exclusively a cosmetic treatment for women who would like a more youthful appearance. With the high level of expertise in our office, we find that more men are becoming more comfortable turning to Botox®, Dysport®, to look and feel more youthful and vigorous.
