Retinoids: The Superstars of Skin Care Products
What single product can have a major impact on the look of your skin within weeks? The humble vitamin A derivatives called retinoids. Many forms of retinoids exist from the oral isotretinoin (Accutane) to tretinoin (Retin-A) to the weakest, retinol. These last two compounds are easily absorbed into the skin and have the ability to communicate effectively with skin cells to improve their function. Their antioxidant properties can interrupt the free-radical damage process that causes skin to look and act older.
“Retinoids , and specifically tretinoin remain some of the best anti-aging topical treatments,” says Esana’s Dr. Davila. “I recommend it to patients for fine lines and wrinkles in conjunction with fillers and skin tightening as well as for uneven pigmentation.”
Tretinoin, combined with vitamin C, E and brightening agents plays an important role in our skin care line. While patients experience some temporary irritation with these products, we have two helpful suggestions: first, use the product only every other night and eventually move to every night once the skin becomes accustomed to it. Secondly, use only a pea-size amount spread in a fine layer all over the face and avoid the sides of the nose and corners of the mouth.
To finish the tretinoin regimen, Dr. Davila recommends a light to medium moisturizer to help with dryness. Since retinoids increase photosensitivity of the skin, adhering to daily sunblock (SPF-30) is a vital part of treatment. Regular use can result in smaller pores and beautiful, healthy skin that behaves and looks younger.
