A New Way to Look and Feel Younger: Blepharoplasty
Aging can be a difficult process. As the years go on, we all age in different ways. While it’s natural to develop wrinkles and fine lines, sometimes they become more than a cosmetic issue. For many people, excess skin around the eyes can cause visual limitations as well as self-consciousness about their appearance. If you’re looking for an effective way to address this problem, blepharoplasty may be right for you!
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty (BLEF-uh-roe-plas-tee) is a type of surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelids. As we age, eyelids stretch, and supporting tissues weaken, causing excess skin and fat to gather above and below your eyelids. This leads to droopy upper lids, and bags under the eyes. Blepharoplasty helps restore your natural beauty by reversing these changes for a more youthful look. This surgery not only offers you the chance to look younger and fresher but it can also be done with minimal discomfort or downtime.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty
The upper lids can be done in the office with no general anesthesia required! We use lidocaine during the procedure, which takes 60-90 minutes. Sutures (stitches) will remain in for only five days following surgery resulting in minimal scarring due to incisions being made on the crease of the eye, making them practically invisible. You gain a rejuvenated appearance with minimal discomfort.
The lower lids require deeper dissection and partial removal of the bulging fat, this is preferably done in the operating room under anesthesia for complete comfort. It takes a similarly short surgery to the upper lids with sutures removed 5 days later as well. Makeup application can be done in 8-10 days to help cover up any residual bruising.
Recovery Process
Immediately following blepharoplasty, you may experience some bruising or swelling near your eyes which should subside after a few days. You may also feel tightness or itching around your eyes as they heal but will subside over time as well. It is important to keep your head elevated while sleeping and avoid strenuous activities during recovery so that you don’t aggravate any healing incisions or cause detrimental bleeding or bruising. After about two weeks following surgery, it is safe to resume normal activities including light exercise that can be gradually ramped up to your usual level of intensity.
What makes me a good candidate for a blepharoplasty?
Ideal candidates are patients who are non-smokers with unwanted skin excess, not necessarily interfering with vision. Blood thinners are a contraindication to surgery, therefore modifications to regimen must be approved by your doctor or cardiologist.
